United Way of Northern New Mexico Offers Free, Online Tax Filing

More than 1.3 Million MyFreeTaxes® Filers Have Used MyFreeTaxes since 2009 

 

United Way of Northern New Mexico, which serves Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties, announced the launch of United Way’s free tax filing through MyFreeTaxes.com. United Way provides online tax filing software, accessible through MyFreeTaxes.com, to help taxpayers at any income level easily, quickly and accurately file federal and state tax returns for free. MyFreeTaxes is just one of several community resource benefits that United Way of Northern New Mexico offers to the local communities. 

“Taxes can be a significant source of stress,” said Cindy Padilla of United Way of Northern New Mexico. “Many of us are overwhelmed  by the complexities of taxes and afraid to make a mistakes. With MyFreeTaxes, you can be informed of the different tax credits and deductions.”

 MyFreeTaxes is available in both English and Spanish. Most filers complete their taxes in under one hour, saving the $200 minimum fee most paid tax preparers charge. For help, filers can connect with IRS-certified specialists at MyFreeTaxes’ helpline (866-698-9435) between 8 AM - 4 PM MT daily from Feb. 6 – October 31. 

In addition, MyFreeTaxes is mobile-optimized, so taxpayers can file seamlessly between their phone, tablet, or computer. The program includes a “refund reveal” during the entire filing process, enabling the taxpayer to see any changes throughout the process. 

MyFreeTaxes also has tax guides for small business owners, gig economy workers, and owners of home-based child care centers; these are all available at MyFreeTaxes.com.  

Tax situations covered for free in MyFreeTaxes include: 

  • W-2 income 

  • Schedule C Self Employment 

  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV student 

  • Education expenses, credits or student loan interest 

  • Unemployment income 

  • Claiming the standard deduction 

  • Earned Income Tax Credit 

  • Child tax credits 

  • Free access to a student debt management tool that will help employees easily lower payments or find loan forgiveness.
