United Way of Northern New Mexico Focus Area Success Stories

Nurturing Children and Youth
Thanks to funding from United Way of Northern New Mexico, Tony goes to an after-school program where he finishes his homework and has a chance to play with friends before his dad picks him up after work. A supervised, safe and low cost after-school program is reassuring for Tony's dad. There are 5,263 youth, many of whom are from low income families and receive scholarships, who are able to receive quality before-school and after-school care or attend preschool programs that help prepare them for kindergarten.

Strengthening Families
Jackie is a single mom with two young children. She earns a minimum wage as a nurse's aide. The old, leaky trailer that she and her children were renting was making her daughter's asthma worse. Jackie was able to purchase a healthy, affordable home through UWNNM funding to a local housing organization. This was the first home that she and her children could call their own. The kids decorated their rooms and Jackie planted flowers. They now feel a part of the neighborhood. There were 6,905 people who purchased new and used building materials to keep their homes from becoming substandard. Two families were able to buy safe, environmentally healthy, decent housing.

Improving Health & Healing
Carol was in a car accident. She had a long road ahead to recovery and was not able to return to work. The financial support she received from a local organization helped to cover her medical bills and prevent a foreclosure on her home. Being able to recover at home added a sense of stability in her life. There are 1,042 individuals who were provided direct financial assistance to help pay for utility payments, food, transportation, medical bills, and childcare during a period of crisis or transition.

Enriching the Lives of our Seniors
Josie, who is an 83-year-old senior, felt forgotten by her family. Her family did not call her, stop by her home, or help in any way. Thanks to funding received through UWNNM to a local senior care organization, Josie is able to see Ramona come to her door everyday. Josie tells her "Oh goodie! Ramonacita never forgets me!" Loneliness is a hard emotion for seniors to deal with, but with proper care, their lives are enriched. Over 350 seniors received daily in-home visits, as well as, transportation to grocery stores and doctor appointments to maintain their independence.
